Walking the Old Street

On returning to the places that shaped a story, and finding them changed.

A cobbled street in an old European town at dusk

This is sample text. The street in my novel no longer exists as I remember it, yet I walked it again last spring, notebook in hand.

Memory and invention

A bildungsroman borrows from life and then argues with it. The real street was narrower. The fictional one has to be true in a different way.

Why return

Because places remember what people forget, and because the light at dusk is the same everywhere you have ever been young.
